A subluxation in chiropractic refers to anything along the area of the spine that disrupts the cycle of nerve communication between the brain and the body. It’s like when one of the circuit breakers outside your house switches off, that electrical transmission breaks off communication to let’s say your microwave. This misalignment of the spine is a short circuit in the body’s nervous system. A subluxation is usually caused by some kind of trauma, such as a fall or an auto collision, or a repeated abnormal movement over time.
When the spine is subjected to this abnormal force, there may or may not be a noticeable shift in the alignment of the vertebrae, but there is almost always a change or reduction of the range of motion to that particular area of the spine.
The bones in your spine are not stuck in one place, they have a range of positions they can move comfortably in. This is why you’re able to turn your head, and bend your back side to side. If one of your vertebrae becomes subluxated, or “out of alignment” due to a trauma, or repetitive motion, that kink will affect the normal movement of the bone. This is when you more than likely will experience stiffness, decreased range of motion, or soreness in your back. You may or may not experience pain, but this abnormal movement will have some kind of effect on the health of your body.
The Chiropractic approach is to help restore a more normal motion and position of the affected spinal bones by specific chiropractic adjustments. The simplicity and success of this approach has been documented in numerous research projects and has helped many patients avoid drugs and surgery.
A doctor of chiropractic can advise you on integrating a holistic approach with spinal Adjusting, strength training, flexibility, and sound nutrition.
